Guestbook for Haskell Whitmire
Suzanne, Nancy, David, Michele and Lauretta . . . so sorry for all your loss. I only had the pleasure of meeting Haskell once . . . back in May 1999 when we had chocolate cake for breakfast. He was a great person, in both size and heart.

We are so sorry for your loss, Aunt Sue, Nancy, Lauretta, David and Michelle, and all of Uncle Haskell's brothers and sisters.
He was a wonderful father figure when we were very young. He was quick with a joke, told the best stories, and warned us about all the poisonous snakes we could find in South Carolina! We love him and we miss him.

He was a kind, caring Father who taught us what love, kindness, caring for others, patience and unselfishness, to name a few virtues, were truly all about.
And I will always remember him for those things, as well as all the great times I shared with him on our father and son "guys' days out" (ie: trips to the auto show in Greenville and NYC to Mets games at Shea Stadium).
But I know in my heart, there will come a day when I will see him again.

Driving up Flat Creek Valley Road will never seem the same again. What memories are entwined with so many happy events and visits to the Whitmire family! And through the years Haskell was such a big part of helping a city girl learn to enjoy riding a patient horse, picking berries, walking in the woods, discovering what a footlog is,so many happy memories that it would take too long and too much space to list them all. To each of Haskell's brothers and sisters...and most especially to Marlene, I send my sympathy and my love. Joyce

It is with great sadness that I share your loss. At the same time I rejoice that he is with the Lord. My memories go back over 65 years and one of the earlies memories is Haskell letting me ride on the crossbar of the plow. Other memories such as lifting me up to ride on their horse named Bob and singing hymns with his wonderful bass voice having a fun day in Florida when he and Sue were here shortly after they got married. He was a fine Christian man who lived his life by example . I cherish these and so many other wonderful memories.

I was never around Haskell that much, but recall what a great evening we shared with Ted at Pixie's and Bill's in Clemson after the passing of my Tom. So much love and blessings I am sending your way. How wonderful that you had so many years together. God is Good and is blessing both of you right now. Onward and upward, my dear friend.

What a special cousin. I always looked forward to seeing him at Granny Owen's house when we were growing up. Lots of memories from back then. Sue, may God Bless you and the family at this time and I know His Grace will be sufficient.

What an amazingly wonderful expression of God's ideal Haskell was and still is! He never seems to lack for love to give to others. His hugs were always the best! He will always be one of my favorite people; I am so glad to have known him. One memory of him stands out to me now. In 1979 I was flying back from Turkey through NYC trying to get to my home in FL. We'd had an emergency landing in Canada, been quarantined on the plane, and more, and I'd missed my connecting flight by probably 1/2 a day. As I dragged myself through customs, I saw Haskell's large frame up ahead. As he hugged me and scooped up all my heavy luggage, my 17-year-old self could not have felt more gratitude and relief. I was in great hands! That was Haskell's way - he never hesitated to demonstrate love through such practical, caring actions.

Today we lost a truly wonderful soul. Grandfather was a person who, for practically my whole life, I've admired, loved, respected, and looked up to. He greeted everyone with a smile and a twinkle in his eyes. He always found the good in a person.

Summers at the Whitmire house are one of my fondest childhood memories - breathing the wonderful country air, swimming in the pool, and playing with the animals. I remember Grandfather dressing up in his bee costume to gather honey. I remember him grooming the horses. I remember him putzing around in that big garage. I remember him taking care of all the animals - dogs, cats, chickens, bees, horses, and even the donkey named Eyeore.

My thoughts and prayers are with Grandmother and her Children as they cope with this loss, as well as all of Grandfather's Siblings and Neices and Nephews. Grandfather was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed by any who knew him.

We have all lost the physical presence of a wonderful Father, Brother, Friend and Husband, and it is already missed greatly. We are so thankful that he lead such a Powerful Life for God while here on Earth. Let us pray for the unity of the families who have loved him so much. Let our memories of him and his many kind and generous acts be told as a standard of God's Loving kindness, and an example of God's Love of us. I know that he is in Heaven checking over his new mansion and looking toward making it an even more beautiful home and restful place!
